The early bird gets the worm! Come out for a few hours of early morning bird watching. Seasoned veterans and fledgling birders alike are invited to help each other build birding skills and contribute to the birding community. Binoculars will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own.

Gather after sundown for a stealthy stroll through the park in search of elusive owls. Please bring a water bottle and come prepared to hike on a mixed surface trail.

Join us for a family friendly hike to one of Richmond’s historic gems, Belle Isle. Learn about the geologic and human history of the island, and the role it has and continues to play in the life of the City. Limited parking is available at 300 Tredegar Street, Richmond, VA 23225. Additional parking can be found on adjacent streets. We will cover about one mile in this walk, on varying gravel terrain. Please wear comfortable, sturdy shoes for walking. This hike will cover mixed surfaces with minimal elevation change.

All ages; Each child must be accompanied by at least one adult.

This hike will begin from Tredegar Parking Lot. Meet at the kiosk at the bottom of the lot adjacent to Tredegar Street- the last kiosk before walking onto the pedestrian bridge to Belle Isle.

Calling all fly fishers! Learn the art of crafting your own fishing flies in Fly Tying 101! This hands-on workshop will introduce beginners to essential fly tying techniques and tools, with a focus on patterns most effective for catching fish found in the James River, like smallmouth bass and stripers. Tying your own flies is a great way to stay connected to the sport in the off season and to save money. Why buy flies when you can make your own? All materials and equipment will be provided.

This month-long lecture series will feature local experts as they share histories, science, and insights that highlight the James River's role in sharping our region. Regardless of whether you are a history buff or consider the James River's ecology to be endlessly fascinating, this series offers a fun opportunity to connect with the James River during its coldest season. Light refreshments will be provided.

Join the James River Park System for FrogWatch, a community science program that invites volunteers to learn to identify and track frog calls. With this training, you will learn about how amphibians are indicators for ecological health, learn monitoring techniques, and practice identifying the calls of frogs and toads local to Richmond. Once trained, you'll be ready to contribute valuable data to a nationwide effort to protect and track amphibians. No prior experience is needed!
